Story:

This book is the first title from LS & S Press, an independent literary publisher. The collection of poems revolve around the theme of music—its culture, its affect on culture, its importance in our personal stories, its heroes. We wanted a cover design that mirrored that, but was also playful and inviting. Bold colors, a hint of nostalgia, and the serendipitously stumbled-upon pairing of League Gothic and Gotham Rounded do that nicely. We also didn't want the interior layout to look like the majority of contemporary American poetry books—not using Times or Garamond for the body copy was a big step by itself in that regard. We used Verlag for headings and Mercury for the body, both from Hoefler & Frere-Jones, which grant the poems a bit of character while still providing optimal readability.
